The League Cup Final was held at Northgate and with players handicaps ranging from minus nine to plus four - a good contest was expected
The spectators were not disappointed- it turned out to be one of the most fiercely fought finals of the year
The very first game threw together Charles Goddard for Hospital Sparks and Thomas Baxter for Kings Church "A"
The latter started plus six and took the first set 21 - 20.
Charles fought back with excellent retrieving and strong hits to take the second by the same score. The deciding game produced very good strategic play and was finally won by Charles 21 - 19
Martin Clarke evened the score for Kings winning in three against Brendan Green
Another close game saw Andrew Lilley edge home against Chris Durrant
Martin then met Charles and went down in three 16 - 21 /
21 -17 / 21 - 19
In an excellent controlled game Chris beat Thomas two straight to put Sparks one up - but Andrew evened the score by winning against Brendan
Chris played another good game against Martin forcing the latter to make the errors and went on to win 21 - 17 / 21-13
Andrew once again came to the rescue for Kings beating Charles in the eighth set to level the score four games all
With both players setting their sights on the trophy- Thomas met Brendan and in a most exciting and entertaining game the latter- using great agility won the title for Sparks with a 21 - 20 / 21 - 18 victory
With Sparks celebrating a good solid victory-congratulations must go to the young Kings team who played extremely well and were just pipped by the odd point in a couple of games which made all the difference.

The second division singles were played at Northgate on Tuesday and attracted an entry of nineteen players who were then drawn into 4 groups- playing best of three games
Group "A" Mike Wood came out top undefeated. Rhys Calder had two very good games that went to three against Colin Fortescue and Sam Mallett
Group "B"
Young Josh Baxter although not winning a game played
some good table tennis he went down in three to Darren Smith 21 - 23
Reg Cadmore and Dick Boyce were on even points but in the deciding game Dick won and went through to the Semi-finals
Group "C" Michael Edwards topped this group but only after a strong challenge from Graham Chapman and Simon Rouse
Group "D"
The first game of this group really decided who would take top place when Albert Cadmore beat Alan Jones and won all his other games
Alan came second followed by Ashley Moore/ Curtis Beales and Aiden Rumsby
Semi- Finals - Michael Edwards versus Dick Boyce saw a tight first game which Michael won 21 - 19- he then hit his way to victory in the second 21 - 13
A long struggle between Albert Cadmore and Mike Woods saw Mike take the first game 21 - 12- but Albert fought back to win the next 21 - 14 and with a change of tactics the third by the same score
The Final was a contrast of styles with Michael attacking and Albert retrieving- with good rallies generously applauded by those who stayed to watch
Michael took the title 2l -l3 / 2l -18
Referees were Edna Fletcher and Charles Hacon
The first division singles on Thursday could only muster eight players- two groups were formed

Ernie George won all his games with Bob Lamb as runner-up. Charles Hacon had a good match against Martin Clarke losing 11 - 21/ 22 - 20/ 21 - 11
The second group had Thomas Baxter and Ray Lee win two each and in the play -off Ray went through as winner
Eddie Fuller and Aaron Hacon won one each
Ernie defeated Thomas 21 - 14 / 21 - 16
Bob defeated Ray 21 - 14 / 21 - 13
The Final saw Bob ease ahead in both games but Ernie then steadied his game and with a few lucky shots stormed ahead to win 21 - 11 / 21- 13

Half-Way Report - submitted 05/01/08 by Edna Fletcher
The first half of the season has seen Burrage and St Johns "B" emerge as expected contenders for the title. The holders- Burrage who field the three strongest players in their team must be favourites to retain their title- although the Saints will push them all the way.
Newly promoted Kings Church "A" have done very well in the higher division- Martin Clarke has led his team well and received good support from Andrew Lilley and junior Thomas Baxter. The highlight of their season must be the exciting 5 - 4 victory over Burrage in the Semi-Final of the League Cup
and although the lesser team received 8 / 9 and 12 points start in each game- Burrage used their experience well and the match hinged on the last game. Martin Clarke kept his nerve to win this deciding game and moved his team forward to the Final where they will meet Hospital Sparks who beat BSC in another close match 5 - 4 thanks to three from Chris Durrant
Many matches in this cup competition have been won by the odd game proving that the handicapping is proving to be correct
Caister Com. find themselves at the bottom end of Division One with Hospital Sparks and Police just above them. Sparks have yet to find last seasons form and Police must catch up games to be played by Jan. 28th
Division Two has Kings Church "B" on top closely followed by Gorl.Cons and Hospital Telecom
Acle Pirates are improving all the time and new teams Kings "D" and Acle "B" are enjoying the season and picking up points
Other juniors- Brendan McMannus / Curtis Beales / Arron Kemp and Josh Baxter are gaining experience- likewise the youngsters at Acle B
Ernie George is currently helping with after school table tennis at Cliff Park school- John Sergent has helped with the "over 50s" introducing our sport
Peter Smith and his helpers are to be congratulated in making their venue at Kings Church available for practice and always welcome any new players
Resolution for the New Year- practice "good serving and sporting conduct" may you all enjoy the second half of the season - best wishes for 2008

Dickie Moore Cup Report - submitted 09/09/07 by Edna Fletcher
The new season started with the "Dickie Moore" Cup competition. A large entry of 27 players were drawn into four groups- which meant playing one game only of 2l - up to finalise on time.

GROUP ONE with 7 players saw Ernie George come out top with 6 wins. Chris Durrant took second spot- followed by Kevin Baker and Andrew Lilley. Juniors, Josh Baxter and Curtis Beales took 6th and 7th places.

GROUP TWO had some very close games- Michael Edwards just losing on deuce to both Wally Ladmore and Martin Clarke- the latter played well but could only take third place behind Ladmore and Ray Lee. The last 4 places went to Ashley Marsh- Michael Edwards- Sophie Baker and Jackie Fortescue.

GROUP THREE winner was Paul Wright (J) and runner-up was Luke Caswell, followed by Paul Light, Thomas Baxter, Sam Mallett and Derek Humphreys.

GROUP FOUR Carl Stevenson raced to victory but second place was hotly fought for with John Smith, Simon Allen and Colin Fortescue tying. On countback for and against it was Allen who went through by +l. Simon Rouse and Aiden Rumsby completed this group.

The quarter finals saw Ernie George defeat Luke Caswell 2l-l0, Paul Wright just won against Chris Durrant 23-21, Wally Ladmore defeated Simon Allen 2l-10 and Carl Stevenson beat Ray Lee 2l-18.

Semi -Finals were the best of three games. The first produced the shock of the tournament when Stevenson took out the holder George in two straight sets, winning 2l-10 and 21-17. Wright took the first game from Ladmore 21-16. Were we in for another upset? Back battled Ladmore to win the next two 21-16 and 21-15 to take his place in the final.

The final was an excellent game with great rallies- the experience of Ladmore told in the end and he ran out a comfortable winner against Stevenson, winning 21-13 / 21-13.

Tournament Officer Terry Franklin, Tournament Secretary Edna Fletcher and Charles Hacon officiated. Thanks go to Martin Clarke, Terry Franklin, Reg Cadmore and Chris Durrant for their help at the Town Hall on Wednesday evening.

League Cup matches have started - please let the Match Results Secretary, Peter Smith, have the results immediately after each game. Northgate players are reminded that their fees should be paid as soon as possible.
