Mercury
report submitted by Edna Fletcher on 14/02/10

The first half of the season has been completed. Secretaries have worked hard to play/re-arrange matches affected by the bad weather and have been calling on Juniors and players from the lower division to help out.

Young Josh Baxter has helped out Hospital St Johns "A" standing in for the injured Eddie Fuller (maybe Eddie should have a course of spinach !!! ).

Burrage strengthened their position at the top of Division One with two more decisive victories.  B.S.C pushed up the table when they gained fourteen points from their last two matches.

Newly promoted Kings Church "B" are picking up points and holding position. Hospital Sparks and Gorleston Conservatives are currently in the bottom two places.

Top of Division Two is between Hospital Telecom and Hospital Claydon with the latter just ahead.

The young players of ENSFC "B" - Kings Church Crusaders and Caister "B" are all doing well and enjoying their matches -  Kings Church "C" team will do better now they have signed Jason Austin.

Kings Church "D" team has had to withdraw, their results have been deleted.

Mill Lane - Caister "A" and the Beacons all continue to produce surprising results.

A reminder that entries for the Town Handicap must be received by Wednesday February 24th. Singles will be played on TUESDAY MARCH 2nd - Doubles on THURSDAY MARCH 4th.

The group rounds of the Spring Pairs Competition have been completed and some interesting results emerged- notably the advancement made by the younger players in every tournament they play

St John’s “A”  Bob Lamb with Ray Lee won Group “A” the former was unbeaten- new player Curtis Robinson playing for Kings Church “C” had a narrow win of  21 – 20 over Ray

Burrage were good runners –up- Ernie George and Ryan Moore dug in to overcome their big handicaps and racked up seven points

Group “B” played at Mill Lane saw two teams – St John’s “B”  Paul Wright Snr and Jnr . and Kings Church Crusaders represented by Curtis Beales and Brendan McManus tie for top position-  in the play off Curtis beat Paul Jnr 21 – 15 for the extra point that took his team to victory-  Robin Tovell and Paul White were the players for BSC and Derek Humphries and John Smith for Mill Lane Beacons

Thanks go to Mike Harvey who was the referee for this group

In Group “D”  Kings Church “D” team failed to arrive thus reducing the teams to three

ENSFC  “B”  represented by Alex Harley and Peter Littleboy came out top with seven points followed by Hospital Police- Tony Shaw and Steve Allen – and Chris Durrant and Brendan Green for Hospital Sparks

Group “D” saw Hospital “A” battle their way to victory- Stuart Baxter played very well to overcome his – 14 handicap losing only  one game to Martin Piggot and was supported by Simon Allen with six points

A great battle for Runner-up spot between Kings Church “A” Mill Lane and ENSFC “A” with the  latter stealing the position by one point

Group “E” was probably the most exciting with eight games being won/lost at  21 – 20

Kevin Chaney was involved in three and came out unbeaten and with team mate Chris Neve backing up took the group title

Hospital Claydon- Brian Cunningham and Roy Pells  wer good runners-up followed by Hospital Telecom / Kings “B” and Gorleston Conservative Club- the latter team lost three of their games 20 – 21

St Johns “B” played a strong team against Kings Church “B” and won all ten games. In a very close match Kings Church “A” just pipped Hospital Dynamos thanks to three from Thomas Baxter.

Ray Lee won three and this helped St Johns “A” to an 8 - 2 victory over Gorleston Conservatives. The Con Club then ground out a 5 – 5 draw when they met Hospital Sparks. Young Louis Woolston had an excellent win over the experienced Brendan Green and then Albert Cadmore and Malcolm Vasey overturned a deficit of 8-17 in the first game of the doubles to win 26 - 24 /  28 - 30  /  21 - 19.

Hospital Police were too strong against the Gorleston Club and with Nick Calver and Tony Shaw gaining maximums they won 8 - 2.

Kings Church Crusaders with Curtis Beales unbeaten tried hard to beat ENSFC “B” but eventually went down 4 - 6.

ENSFC “A” met Kings Church “C” who could only muster two players and they won 9 - 1. Kings then met Caister Com “A” and although Mathew Smith won at 17 in the third against Malcolm King the score ended up Caister winning nine games to one.

The College A team then met Hospital Telecom but went down by the narrowest margin six games to four. Telecom could not follow up their win when they met Caister “A” but ground out a hard fought draw.

Caister C A “B” had Charlie Hacon, Gavin Brewer and Tyler Harrison unstoppable and they won 10 - 0 against Hospital Claydon.

Michael Harvey and John Smith led their team Mill Lane Beacons to a 9 - 1 victory when they met Kings Church “C”.

Thomas Turrell had a good win over Louis Woolston but could not stop Claydon from beating Kings Church “D” 9 - 1.

Week beginning January 11th sees the Spring Pairs Competition swing into place – paper work is now ready for distribution.

The Annual Sports Partnership Games was recently held in Kings Lynn. Several sports were represented including table tennis.

Players were from Broadland, Dereham, Wymondham, West Norfolk, Norwich and East Norfolk.  Richard Grove, the Sports Officer Organiser for the East  is based at the Cliff Park High School and held trials at the school where Josh Baxter and Mathew Current together with Casey Packham and Kizzie Packham  were chosen to represent the table tennis section.

Josh having qualified in first position was drawn in a group playing all other number 1s and came third overall. Mathew played in the group meeting other number 2s and came out top, the two became overall boys winners. The girls at 11years old tried hard but were up against older and more experienced players  but will have ample opportunity to enjoy better results in the future.

Ernie George who has been a leading player in the Yarmouth and Lowestoft Leagues for many years has recently qualified as a table tennis coach and he accompanied the players to the tournament.

At present Ernie is kept very busy coaching different levels at various local schools and clubs including Belton, Bradwell, Priory, Alderman Swindell, Gt Yarmouth High School, Kings Centre, ENSFC, John Grant school and a beginners class at Northgate Hospital Social Club.

Anyone interested in coaching please ring 601504  OR  667440.

The second semi saw Brian put out Peter – two straight.

The final was a good entertaining game, Josh took the first  21 – 11  but Brian changed tactics using his vast experience to win the second  21 – 13.  All to play for in the third.  Brian took a lead and went to a 15 – 10 lead but young Josh fought back point by point to square at 15 –all, but two errors gave Brian the lead and he hung on to take the title 21 – 18.
