What is the Great Yarmouth & District Table Tennis League?

The Great Yarmouth & District Table Tennis League was established on October 20th 1931 and exists to promote Table Tennis and to provide competitive Table Tennis in and within a 10 mile radius of Great Yarmouth and to encourage table tennis generally.

The league currently consists of 17 teams in 2 Divisions. In Division One, there are 9 Teams playing 14 league matches and in  Division Two there are 8 Teams playing 14 league matches during the season.

The league season commences in September and finishes in April each year. As well as the league fixtures there are also various Tournaments and Competitions during the season.

The Great Yarmouth & District Table Tennis League is affiliated to the English Table Tennis Association (ETTA) and all league matches are played 11up. Tournaments during the season may either be 11up or 21up.

How do I organise a team?

Teams can be organised as formally or informally as you like, but you will need the following:

  • A club secretary. This can be simply the name and contact details of the person running the club.
  • A venue with a table tennis table, available for home league matches on the night of the week on which your teams will play. Away matches are played on the home night chosen by the opponents.
  • Matches normally start at 7.15 to 7.30pm, dependent on venue. Junior teams can start earlier if agreed by both teams prior to the match.
  • Teams have to abide by the rules as specified in the members handbook. These rules can change from season to season.  Rules for 2011/12 season (PDF format)

What happens in a league match?

A team consists of three players (though we prefer that at least four players are registered for each team, to ensure reserve cover). In a league match, each player plays a singles set against each of the three opponents, making a total of nine sets. At the end of the evening, each team chooses two of its players to take part in one doubles set, which brings the total number of sets played in the match to 10. Each of those sets won counts as one point to be added to the team's league total. League games are played 11up, the best of 5.

What happens in a Handicap tournament match?

In a handicap knockout match, each player is handicapped individually, and the singles sets are played according to those handicaps. In order to remove the possibility of a drawn match, no doubles set is played. Handicap matches may be played either 21up or 11up with the number of games dependent on the the tournament.

How do I arrange matches?

The league publishes a handbook each year setting out the schedule for all league matches, so all you have to do is to turn up on the appointed date. On occasions it may be necessary to postpone a match, in which case it is the responsibility of the teams concerned to ensure that the match is rearranged and played. In the knockout tournament, the participating teams are informed of the dates, opponents and venues (i.e. home or away) in each round.
